The E. K. Harry Library of Fishes, located on the second floor of the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum,
is the information center of the International Game Fish Association. Its mission is to collect, docum ent,
and preserve significant materials and artifacts relating to the past, present and future of sport fish and
sport fishing, to provide access to these materials, and to disseminate information to the local, national
and international public.
Though the International Game Fish Association had been collecting materials since its inception in 1939,
the Library was officially established in 1973 by IGFA President Elwood K. Harry in response to the recognized
need for a permanent repository for angling literature, films, photographs and artifacts. Today it enjoys a
reputation as the most extensive and comprehensive recreational fishing collection in the world.
Library materials are received by donation and exchange from collectors; writers; book, magazine and video
publishers; organizations; clubs; members and Museum visitors. Hundreds of private donors have determined
that IGFA is the most appropriate repository for their special collections; all donors can be assured that
their significant gifts will be preserved and retained for future generations. First editions, photograph
albums, scrapbooks, negatives, and special items and artifacts are stored in the Library's Rare Book Room,
a secure, temperature- and humidity-controlled environment. Since Library materials do not circulate, the
entire collection is always available for research or browsing by visitors during Library hours. Reference
service is also provided for off-site (worldwide) patrons.
The E. K. Harry Library of Fishes currently contains more than 15,000 books, from first editions of angling
classics to the latest books in print; 150 outdoor and fishing magazines from many countries and in many
languages (some of which go back to the 1930s); 2,100 videos, including classic fishing films from the
1930s, 1940s and 1950s as well as modern releases; hundreds of technical journals, papers and bulletins
from scientific institutions, government agencies and individual researchers; an extensive collection of
newsletters and yearbooks from organizations and fishing clubs; thousands of slides and photographs
ranging from historic record catches and exciting action shots of fish and fishing to famous anglers
of yesterday and today; memorabilia from sport fishing greats, including documents, research, news
clippings, scrapbooks, and private correspondence; fish mounts; original art; trophies; a stamp collection;
and much more. Title, author and subject access (by more than 5,000 fishing-related subject headings) to
the entire collection is provided by the Library's unique database.
