Peter Teakle Wins 2012-2013 IGMR


OCTOBER 1, 2013 -- With 30 satellite tags deployed in blue marlin, black marlin, and sailfish in six countries, the second year of the IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) has come to a close. The IGFA’s billfish research program, working in collaboration with Stanford University, held seven tagging events in 2012-2013 that tracked a total of 17,059 nautical miles (nm) on imperiled billfish species worldwide, covering more than 5,000 nm more than the previous year. Every fish track is available to the public and to researchers to help them learn more about billfish, but the fish that travels the farthest is crowned the annual IGMR winner. This year’s winning fish was a 360 kg (794 lb) black marlin outfitted with a satellite tag sponsored by Peter Teakle during the 26th Annual Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic in Australia, which travelled 2,577 nm – 15% of the total distance recorded in the entire year – before the tag popped up after 69 days. IGMR Race Update: Tahiti, French Polynesia 2013 Race


Since the start of the IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) in 2011, a total of 47 MK-10 Pop-up Archival Transmitting (PAT) tags have been deployed on marlin in Africa, Australia, Ecuador, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Hawaii. Although the MK-10 satellite tags can offer a deployment period of over a year, the IGMR was using 120 day deployments that were increased to 180 days at the 2012 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. With the assistance of IGFA Representative Bob Lowe, the IGFA Great Marlin Race went to Lizard Island, Australia in October 2012 for the 26th Annual Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic! A total of five tags were generously sponsored by Lizard Island Game Fish Club member Peter Teakle. The first tag was deployed on the sixth day of the tournament, October 26, 2012, on a 400 kg (880 lb) black marlin that was released in perfect condition. The fish was caught by Tim Ballantine and tagged by Jack Graham aboard Afishionado. IGMR Race Update: San Juan, Puerto Rico 2012 Race


For the second consecutive year, the IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) participated in the International Billfish Tournament (IBT) of Club Náutico de San Juan! The IGMR was eager to participate after a very successful tagging event in the previous year, where the winning marlin traveled a distance of 4,776 nautical miles and holds the record for the longest marlin track to date. IGMR Race Update: Kona, USA 2012 Race


Ten tags have been sponsored at the 53rd Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) in Kailua Kona! It didn’t take long for the fishing to get hot at this year’s HIBT. The HIBT is the first race location for the IGMR's second year and day one of the tournament saw three fish tagged. The first fish tagged was a 136 kg (300 lb) blue marlin caught by Stephanie Chen aboard the Golden Aussie, piloted by Capt. Dave McComas.
