2018 IGFA Conservation Award - Bouncer Smith

Throughout his long career as a captain, Bouncer Smith has been a mentor to many anglers on issues of marine conservation. He has participated in numerous important tagging studies for species such as mahi-mahi and billfish. He has also been a staunch proponent of catch-and-release and has educated a large number of anglers on proper catch and release methods. Smith was one of the first captains in South Florida to start using circle hooks and has also participated in several scientific studies that documented their efficacy as a conservation tool. Furthermore, his influence in fishing clubs and with tournament organizers was crucial to the acceptance of circle hooks in all billfish tournaments in South Florida. Most recently, he has become involved in educating the public on the value of properly designed marine protected areas.
