IGFA Addresses Tail Snares in New Rule Language

The IGFA recently announced a clarification to the  International Angling Rules, specifically pertaining to the use of tail snares which are considered legal and are included in the rules regarding gaffs and nets.

Tail snares, which have been considered as IGFA-compliant were not specifically addressed in this language.  The IGFA’s policy has been that tail snares are IGFA-compliant provided they have an overall length (from the beginning of the handle to the apex of the snare when loaded) of no more than 2.44 meters  (8 feet) in length, which is consistent with the total length that we allow for gaffs and nets.

The updated IGFA International Angling Rules language under Section H. item 3 now reads as follows:

Gaffs (including flying gaffs), nets and tail snares used to boat or land a fish must not exceed 2.44 meters (8 feet) in overall length. In the case of tail snares, overall length is defined as the distance from the beginning of the handle to the apex of the snare when loaded. In using a flying or detachable gaff, the rope may not exceed 9.14 meters (30 feet). The gaff rope must be measured from the point where it is secured to the detachable head to the other end. Only the effective length will be considered. If a fixed head gaff is used, the same limitations shall apply and the gaff rope shall be measured from the same location on the gaff hook. Only a single hook is permitted on any gaff. Harpoons or lances are prohibited. Tail ropes are limited to 9.14 meters (30 feet). When fishing from a bridge, pier, or other high platform or structure, this length limitation does not apply.

“The addition of this new language regarding tail snares helps to address some of the questions we have been receiving,” stated IGFA President Jason Schratwieser. “We are always looking for ways to make the IGFA’s Angling Rules clearer and more applicable for anglers around the world.”
