IGFA Announces Dynamic New Leadership for Africa Regional Council
Chris Schorn Appointed Chair of IGFA Africa Regional Council
The IGFA is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Schorn as the new Chair of the IGFA Africa Regional Council.
Having been involved in deep-sea fishing most of his life, Chris has been a member of the Plettenberg Bay Angling Association since 2000, where he later served as Chairman for seven years. He has represented the association on the Southern Cape Deep Sea Angling Association (SCDSAA) Committee, served as Chairman of SCDSAA for five years, and is a former President of the South African Deep Sea Angling Association (SADSAA), one of the most prominent recreational fishing organizations in the country. Chris has also been serving as an IGFA Trustee since 2023, further demonstrating his commitment to the global sport fishing community. Beyond angling, he is actively involved in conservation as an Honorary Ranger with the South African National Parks.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Johan Zietsman for his outstanding leadership and dedication as the founding Chair of the Africa Council. Johan’s efforts were instrumental in establishing the Council and setting it on a path for future success.
We look forward to seeing the Africa Council continue to grow and thrive under Chris’s leadership!
New IGFA Representatives
Ahmed Afzal (Afu) Rasheed – Maldives
Afu’s passion for fishing began in his Boy Scout days and deepened when a friend introduced him to rod and reel fishing. As interest in sportfishing grew, Afu turned his hobby into a profession, traveling to introduce others to the sport. Today, he works as a charter boat operator and saltwater flyfishing guide, collaborating with brands to test lures and help launch charter businesses. He played a key role in a local IGFA Passports to Fishing event and now leads trips through Fishing Charters Maldives. Afu is a proud IGFA member and pro team member of Hurch Flyfishing, dedicated to sharing the joy of fishing with others.
Michael Raponi – GA, USA
Michael was introduced to fishing by his father at age four, sparking a lifelong passion. Today, he enjoys both fresh and saltwater fishing around the world. He is committed to advancing the IGFA’s mission by promoting participation in the sport, supporting conservation, and encouraging ethical angling to help preserve fishing for future generations. Michael is especially passionate about the IGFA Great Marlin Race, where he actively raises awareness, helps secure funding for satellite tags, and assists with tag deployment. Through his efforts, he hopes to inspire others and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sport he loves.
Brock Johnston – New Zealand
Brock started fishing at age three, thanks to his dad who got him hooked early. Now 18, he holds several IGFA World Records, New Zealand records, and is the youngest known weighmaster across all NZSFC-affiliated clubs. He takes the role seriously—ensuring every catch is weighed accurately, processes are fair, and the station runs smoothly. Brock also dedicates time to mentoring junior anglers at Counties Sport Fishing Club, teaching them how to tag fish, guiding them through competition days, and helping them build confidence and teamwork. His passion for fishing extends beyond personal success, as he continues to inspire and support the next generation of anglers.
Mohamed Almas – Maldives
Mohamed Almas is a respected Maldivian fishing guide and passionate angler with over 20 years in the tourism industry. Among the first locals to promote sport fishing as both exciting and sustainable, he has fished in every atoll of the Maldives. Known for his skill in targeting yellowfin tuna and billfish, he is highly sought after by tourists and locals alike. Since 2012, he has championed ethical angling and marine conservation. Almas is the only Maldivian to represent his country in an international fishing competition and helps organize local events. In 2024, he was named the official Maldivian Influencer for Zenaq, further inspiring the next generation of responsible anglers.
