The IGFA has reached thousands of children with its Fishing Summer Camp and some have chosen careers in the industry or on the water. We are proud to introduce some of the past campers who attended IGFA’s Fishing Summer Camps, and invite you to support our youth education efforts by making a contribution to the IGFA Youth Education Appeal today ➡️ bit.ly/3kEzwBX.

🐟 Name: Heather Harkavy

⏱ First year at IGFA’s Summer Camp: 2004

🏆 Date of first IGFA World Record: July 31, 2004

✅ What did you do after volunteering with the IGFA?
I went to Florida State University for Marketing and Hospitality. Throughout college, I was an intern at Tropic Star Lodge and Costa Sunglasses each summer. These experiences added a lot of value to figuring out the route I wanted to take in the fishing industry. As a young girl whose main friends in the sport were my dad and his peers, IGFA's camp provided a strong community for me. It introduced me to like-minded people at a young age and showed me the power camp like settings have on youth development.

📁 Where are you now?
After graduating I had the chance to work for an organization very near and dear to my heart - Fish for Change. Through Fish for Change we run fly fishing camps for young adults internationally. Each camp is grounded in conservation projects, fly fishing education, and community immersion projects. Community is the base of everything. IGFA has created a community for me throughout my life and I hope to provide the same welcoming community through my career for generations to come!

The IGFA has maintained its standing as the foremost authority on game fish and angling related matters with the help of our IGFA Captains & Guides. Over the next few weeks, we would like to shine the spotlight on IGFA Captains all around the globe.

Today, we are excited to feature IGFA Captain Tom Francis. A childhood spent fishing and diving the remote islands of Papua New Guinea was the beginning of a lifelong passion for the sea and adventure for Captain Tom Francis. He has spent the last 24 years operating the 90-foot Sportfisher Ultimate Lady Charters and is one of the most well-travelled captains in the Pacific. The last 10 years have been spent exploring and fishing the remote islands of French Polynesia.
