Announce 7th International Billfish Symposium
Advancing Science and Management of Billfish in a Changing Ecosystem
As global leaders in the conservation of billfish, The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) and Wild Oceans are thrilled to announce the 7th International Billfish Symposium will take place October 8-10, 2024, at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in San Diego, California. This premier event will bring together the world’s leading experts in billfish science, management, and fisheries to address the present and future conditions of billfish and the key fisheries they influence.
Since its inception in 1972, the International Billfish Symposium has been instrumental in fostering significant advancements in billfish research and management. Each Symposium has built upon the accomplishments of its predecessors, facilitating breakthroughs in understanding billfish biology, migration patterns, and the impacts of environmental changes. These gatherings have been at the forefront of shaping sustainable recreational fishing practices and conservation strategies, making it a cornerstone event for the global billfish community.
This year's theme, "Advancing Science and Management of Billfish in a Changing Ecosystem," highlights the Symposium's commitment to exploring advances across all aspects related to the biology and management of billfish, with a particular focus on evolving climate-related impacts.
The three-day event will cover a wide range of topics such as management, assessment, movement and habitat utilization, basic biology, human dimensions, and recreational and commercial fisheries. The event is designed not only for scientists and managers but is also open to the public, encouraging the participation of billfish anglers and enthusiasts alike.
"The 7th International Billfish Symposium represents a critical opportunity for the global community to come together and share insights on the conservation and management of billfish populations,” said Dr. Bruce Pohlot, IGFA Conservation Director and Symposium Co-Chair. “Our collective efforts are essential in ensuring these magnificent species continue to thrive in our changing ecosystems for generations to come."
