Known for its marlin and tuna fishing, Bermagui is situated on the far south coast of New South Wales where the edge of the Continental shelf is closest to the Australian coast. 1933 saw the first recorded marlin (202 lbs) caught. Word quickly spread and soon anglers were arriving. The most famous, Zane Grey, arrived and set up camp in 1934. In 1936 Bermagui Big Game Anglers Club was formed and billed as the "Headquarters of Big Game Fishing". Michael and Helen Lerner also spent time here working in their field laboratory, before the formation of IGFA.
