Writing "Living Legends of Big Game Fishing"

By Patrick Mansell

Patrick Mansell is the author of two volumes of “Living Legends of Big Game Fishing”, seven books in “The Bimini Twist Adventures” series, and five books in “The Bouncer Smith Chronicles” series. He is a fishing enthusiast and conservation advocate based in South Florida. In writing “Living Legends of Big Game Fishing,” Mansell says that it was never just about collecting big fish stories; rather, it has always been about honoring lifetimes spent on the water and preserving the legacy of the men and women who helped shape the past, present, and future of sportfishing. He tells the stories of pioneers, record breakers, conservationists, tournament legends, and unsung heroes — people who have made sportfishing a way of life and a force for good.

"The journey to capture their voices, experiences and values was part research expedition, part oral history project, and part tribute. Along the way, I encountered logistical challenges, emotional conversations and moments of awe. What emerged was a tapestry of character, courage, innovation, and stewardship."

Below, explore excerpts of Patrick's book that feature those who have etched their names in history through IGFA World Records, induction into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame, honored with the Tommy Gifford Award and the Chester H. Wolfe Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.

IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame Honorees: Legends Among Legends

To be inducted into the IGFA Hall of Fame is the highest honor in our sport and this book features five of these extraordinary individuals. Each one has left an indelible mark on sportfishing’s global story.

Dr. Martin Arostegui – The Quiet Record Breaker

There is only one person who has caught more than 400 IGFA world records, but Dr. Marty Arostegui isn’t one to brag. A retired physician and soft-spoken gentleman, Marty embodies the spirit of strategic, ethical angling. He has fished all over the world, quite often with fly, pursuing many of the common species, but also species that many anglers would not know about and would not know how to catch. Marty’s contribution to the book is not just about numbers; it’s about dedication. Marty teaches that the pursuit of records can coexist beautifully with the pursuit of conservation.

Deborah Dunaway Extraordinary Record Holder

Deborah Dunaway’s story includes adventures aboard the legendary Madam & Hooker mothership operation, numerous IGFA billfish records, and a pioneering role in proving that women could not only compete but could dominate in offshore sportfishing. She proved that passion and precision know no gender. Her Royal Billfish Slam of world records has never been and may never be matched. She held world records in nine species of billfish, all at the same time, and is considered by many to be the greatest female offshore angler in history.

Joan Vernon The Trailblazing Diplomat of Conservation

Joan’s influence reaches far beyond the cockpit. As founder of the Presidential Challenge Conservation Series and officer or director of numerous sportfishing organizations, Joan has combined international sportfishing tourism with ocean advocacy in ways no others could. She pioneered the use of circle hooks in Central America, helped shape conservation policy across borders, and is a past Chair of The Billfish Foundation. She is unique in her ability to balance diplomacy with determination, all while being the consummate lady of the sea.

Tim Choate Architect of Influence

A titan of conservation advocacy, Tim Choate has left an enduring mark through vision and action. As a founding board member of The Billfish Foundation, his leadership helped shape the organization’s mission of responsible sportfishing and scientific collaboration. Tim joined the board of Wild Oceans in the 1980s and served as Chairman from 2011 to 2022. Under his leadership, that organization became a national voice advocating for ecosystem-based fisheries management, focusing on the protection of apex predators such as billfish, tunas, swordfish, and sharks, along with their critical marine habitats.

Nick Smith - Precision. Passion. Perfection.

Few anglers have influenced saltwater fly fishing as profoundly as Nick Smith surpassing over 12,000 lifetime billfish catches. Over six decades, the South Florida native has pursued billfish around the globe, surpassing 10,000 lifetime catches — including more than 6,000 billfish on fly under IGFA rules, with totals exceeding 3,200 sailfish, 3,100 striped marlin, and over 500 blue marlin.

A passionate conservationist, Nick releases every fish he catches. His use of barbless hooks and slider rigs minimizes injury and sets the standard for ethical big-game angling. His records include 38 sailfish, 18 blue marlin (twice), and over 50 (five times) striped marlin on fly in single days. Known for his pursuit of blue marlin, the ultimate fly-rod challenge, he once raised 103 in a day aboard Old Reliable, releasing 18. His innovation and mastery earned him the IGFA Bob Herder Light Tackle Award and induction into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame.

The Tommy Gifford Award

The Tommy Gifford Award, given by the IGFA to Legendary Captains and Crews, is a testament to mastery on the water. These recipients brought depth to the Living Legends narrative, each offering a unique lens into life at sea.

Billy Harrison

Billy Harrison is hard to define as a sport fishing captain because he is so much more than that. As a young man, he cut his teeth on the docks at the famous Pier 5 in Miami, learning from such mentors as Buddy Carey and the Greeks, Bill and George Staros. As he matured, Billy traveled the world as few ever have, with trips to the Great Barrier Reef to fish with legendary Captains Peter Wright and Peter Bristow, twelve trips all over the continent of Africa, The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Mexico, Cape Cod, Hawaii, Prince Edward Island and Bermuda. Billy went on to become one of the biggest competitors in the years the Cat Cay Bluefin Tuna Tournament was running. All the while, Billy was photographing the amazing places he visited, turning himself into a professional photographer with his work appearing in nearly all of the most important sport fishing magazines. In 1986, Billy was awarded NOAA and the National Coalition for Marine Conservation’s highest honor for tagging the most marlin of any captain that year.

Ray Rosher

Captain Ray Rosher of Miami, Florida, has a diverse background in sport fishing, having started as a youngster from a fish camp the family owned in the Everglades. For forty years, Ray has been a recognized force among charter operations in South Florida. Ray is a captain’s captain, highly skilled, deeply analytical, and unwavering in his ethics. He remains active in the tournament circuit, having taken more than thirty billfish tournament titles, including three World Sailfish Championships, two IGFA Offshore World Championships, and five Silver Sailfish Derbies. From his Miss Britt fleet in Miami to his innovations in bait rigging and tournament strategy, and as the owner of R&R Tackle, Ray has proven to be a very successful innovator in fishing gear and has had a transformative influence on the way many of the best anglers and captains fish today.

Karl Anderson

Karl Anderson has been everywhere: The Bahamas, Mexico, Cape Verde, Panama, Australia, and has done it all. As a writer, captain, consultant, and former IGFA rep, Karl’s contributions to the sport are as diverse as the places he’s fished. Karl has built a distinguished reputation as a highly respected yacht manager in the sportfishing world. Best known for his decades-long leadership of the Briar Patch program, he oversaw every aspect of the vessel’s operations from refits and maintenance to crew management, logistics, and international travel. Today, Karl applies that same expertise at Merritt Boatworks in Pompano Beach, Florida, where he works closely with owners, captains, and craftsmen to ensure that each boat reflects both world-class performance and practical functionality born of decades on the water.

Gary Stuve

Gary Stuve’s legacy lies in the elite company he kept and the historic moments he witnessed from the helm. A seasoned captain with decades of offshore experience, Gary captained Dinny Phipps’ Fighting Lady when they won the Cat Cay Bluefin Tuna Tournament in 1975, 1976, 1979 and 1981. In the days when the Cat Cay Tournament was running, this was a crowning achievement in bluefin tuna fishing and established the record to beat. Gary tells of the day off Hatteras, NC, that world-renowned angler, Stewart Campbell, caught an astounding 73 bluefin tuna in a single day, a feat unmatched in modern sportfishing history. Captain Peter B. Wright ran the boat this day with Gary Stuve, Charlie Perry and Charles Hayden in the cockpit.

Laurie Wright

Laurie Wright is the quiet force from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and beyond. He brought old-school seamanship and a global perspective to the fleet of great captains. A student of Peter B. Wright and a mentor to many, Laurie is celebrated not just for his skill but for his integrity, humility, and global ambassadorship for sportfishing. His recognition with the Tommy Gifford Award affirms the deep respect he earned across oceans.

Brad Simonds

Based in the Florida Keys, Brad Simonds has earned his reputation through an impressive tournament record and decades of high-level operation in some of the world’s most competitive fishing grounds. Known for his meticulous approach and calm command at sea, Brad has guided his clients to countless victories while always maintaining the highest standards of seamanship and sportsmanship. He exemplifies the professionalism, passion, and conservation-minded ethos that define a true living legend.

Arch Bracher

Arch Bracher is one of the most respected and enduring figures in the North Carolina sportfishing community. With decades of experience running boats out of Oregon Inlet, Arch built a reputation on consistency, professionalism and a deep understanding of the offshore waters he’s fished for much of his life. His encyclopedic knowledge of the Gulf Stream and the Mid-Atlantic fishery, combined with his steady hand and sharp instincts, has earned him the admiration of peers and competitors alike. Arch stands as a symbol of dedication to the craft — modest, skilled, and unshakably reliable, a true Living Legend from the Outer Banks.

Chip Shafer

Chip Shafer has earned his place among the sportfishing elite through a career marked by excellence, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his craft. With a resume that spans the world’s premier billfish destinations, including Costa Rica, Venezuela, The Bahamas, Panama, Mexico and the U.S. East Coast, Chip is known not only for his tournament success but also for mentoring a new generation of professional crews. In more recent years, Chip has run the sportfishing boat Old Reliable and been the driving force behind the amazing success of Nick Smith in his quest for billfish on fly.

More From the Author

Lessons in Legacy

One of the unexpected rewards of this journey was discovering how deeply interwoven these legends’ lives are. Many mentored each other. Some fished together. Others competed fiercely but remained friends. They represent different generations, different oceans, and different methods, but all share a deep reverence for the sea. What united them wasn’t just skill; it was responsibility. Whether tagging billfish, teaching young mates, influencing legislation, or promoting ethical tournaments, these individuals made choices that extended far beyond their own success.

The Writer’s Reward

As an author, you always hope your work connects. But with this Living Legends book the connection was personal. Readers inside and outside of the fishing world told me they were inspired by the discipline, character, and conservation values on display. For me, that was the real reward. This book wasn’t just about preserving stories; it was about preserving a standard, a code, and a culture that values not just what you catch, but how you fish.

A Final Word to Fellow Anglers

To the IGFA community and fellow offshore anglers, I offer this book as both a tribute and a challenge. Let these legends remind us that big game fishing isn’t just about battles with apex predators; it’s about leadership, legacy, and learning to leave the ocean better than we found it. Because when the lines are reeled in, the true measure of a fishing life isn’t the size of the catch, it’s the depth of the impact.

Tight lines — and tighter bonds.
