Cabo Kids’ Fishing Camp
(Campamento de Pesca Deportiva)
The IGFA hosted the first Kids’ Fishing Camp in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2025 thanks to the Terry & Linda Smith Legacy Fund! Twenty-seven local youth ages 10-16 years endured an immersive 3-day camp experience learning from local captains and guides while fishing from shore, the surf, and on sportfishing boats in the vast waters of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez, targeting species like roosterfish and dolphinfish (dorado) with a great chance of hooking up on a billfish.
In collaboration with Pisces Sportfishing, FONMAR, Minerva’s Baja Tackle, IGFA Representatives, and IGFA Ambassador and Cabo Surf Caster Wesley Brough, the IGFA is excited to bring the camp back in 2026 for local youth to become the next generation of conservation-minded captains. Participants will learn the history of Cabo sportfishing and the importance of ethical angling and conservation, practice basic fishing skills, and explore various career pathways for them to pursue in the fishing and boating community of Cabo San Lucas.

May 29-31, 2026

Day 1 will focus on Basic Fundamentals with industry-related presentations and a Passports to Fishing session with FONMAR.
Day 2 will take the camp surf fishing and then visiting Minerva’s Baja Tackle, a historic Cabo tackle shop, as well as tour sportfishing vessels up close and personal in the marina.
Day 3 will venture out onto the water!
“Terry and I traveled to Cabo San Lucas for the first time in September 2007. Since that first trip, we haven't missed a single year of traveling to Cabo. In fact, since 2009, we’ve increased our visits from once a year to three or four times annually, usually fishing at least twice during each visit. Sadly, my best friend, fishing partner, and husband, Terry, passed unexpectedly on November 7, 2022. In his honor—and in our shared love for Cabo and fishing—I hope to inspire the younger generation to appreciate and conserve the natural beauty that surrounds them while also promoting the incredible fishing waters of Cabo.”
